Liverpool Legend Sir Kenny Dalglish Honoured With 2026 PFA Merit Award
Some honours require little explanation. Sir Kenny Dalglish receiving the PFA Merit Award in 2026 belongs firmly in that category.

The Liverpool icon has been recognised by the Professional Footballers’ Association for his lasting contribution to football, sharing this year’s honour with former England international Karen Carney.
Both will receive their awards at Tuesday evening’s PFA ceremony in Manchester, where the leading individual prizes for the 2025-26 season will also be announced.

Liverpool Career Built on Greatness
Dalglish arrived at Liverpool from Celtic in 1977 for a British record transfer fee. Replacing Kevin Keegan was an intimidating assignment. He proceeded to become one of the defining figures of the greatest period in Liverpool’s history.

His numbers tell part of the story. Dalglish made 515 appearances for Liverpool, winning eight First Division titles and three European Cups. He finished second in the 1983 Ballon d’Or voting.
Scotland also had the benefit of his remarkable talent. Dalglish remains the country’s most capped male player with 102 appearances and shares the national scoring record of 30 goals with Denis Law.
Management Added Another Chapter
Liverpool appointed Dalglish player manager in 1985. Success continued, including three league championships and two FA Cups.
His first campaign produced the 1985-86 league and FA Cup double, with Dalglish famously scoring the goal at Chelsea that secured the title.

He resigned in February 1991 before eventually returning to management with Blackburn Rovers. Dalglish guided Blackburn to the Premier League title in 1995 and subsequently managed Newcastle United and Celtic.
Liverpool called again in 2011. His second spell produced the 2012 League Cup, another trophy added to an extraordinary association with the club.
Hillsborough Defined Dalglish Beyond Football
Trophies alone cannot explain Dalglish’s standing on Merseyside.
Following the Hillsborough disaster in 1989, he supported grieving families and attended funerals while carrying the enormous responsibilities that came with managing Liverpool. His compassion during Liverpool’s darkest period became as important to his legacy as anything achieved on a football pitch.

Dalglish and his wife Marina have also raised millions for cancer care through the Marina Dalglish Appeal, established in 2005 following her treatment for breast cancer.
In June 2026, Dalglish announced that he was undergoing cancer treatment himself.
PFA Recognition Feels Entirely Fitting
Earlier this month, Dalglish visited a new mural dedicated to him at The ARC Hotel on Anfield Road after former boxer Tony Bellew helped arrange the visit.
Now comes recognition from the PFA.
“Sir Kenny Dalglish has been honoured as the winner of the PFA Merit Award. 🏆”
For Liverpool supporters, the affection has never depended upon another medal or trophy. Dalglish earned his place in the club’s history decades ago.
The PFA Merit Award simply provides football with another opportunity to recognise why Sir Kenny remains such an important figure in the game.
