The NFL Players Association is investigating the Carolina Panthers.
According to Joe Person of The Athletic, the NFLPA plans to examine the circumstances surrounding second-year edge rusher Nic Scourton’s injury. Scourton tore his ACL on the first day of Panthers training camp, on Thursday, July 23.

Per Person, the NFLPA will be looking into whether the Panthers were following the rules of an acclimation period to begin training camp that are laid out in the league and union’s Collective Bargaining Agreement. The CBA’s guidelines state that live contact is prohibited during the first five days of training camp, and that the first day of camp “shall be limited to physical examinations, meetings, and classroom instruction; no on-field activities shall be permitted other than running and conditioning.”

The NFLPA’s investigation will determine whether the Panthers were following protocol and if Scourton’s injury was of a non-contact variety. If they review the video of Carolina’s practice and determine otherwise, the team could face punishment for violating the CBA.
Scourton, 21, was a second-round pick by the Panthers in the 2025 NFL Draft. As a rookie last year, he appeared in all 17 games, starting eight of them, and recorded five sacks. Heading into 2026, Scourton was set for a potential breakout year playing alongside Carolina’s top-flight free agent linebacker signings: Jaelan Phillips and Devin Lloyd. Instead, he likely will miss all of the 2026 season with a torn ACL.
