Merril Hoge was an NFL analyst on ESPN for over 20 years.

He also played running back and fullback for the Pittsburgh Steelers for seven seasons and then one year for the Chicago Bears.

To say he’s seen his fair share of football is an understatement.

So when Hoge has an opinion about current quarterbacks in the league, it’s worth paying attention.

He recently went on former ESPN colleague Trey Wingo’s podcast and veered off a conversation about the Pittsburgh Steelers’ murky QB room to shower praise on Cincinnati Bengals QB Joe Burrow.

The analyst began by explaining that QBs can’t win championships alone. Otherwise, he argued, the Bengals would have won the Super Bowl two years in a row on account of having Burrow. “Joe Burrow is the best quarterback in football,” Hoge said. “Period.”

Wingo immediately stepped in and said, “People in Buffalo and Kansas City are going to be very mad at you.”

Hoge then explained his reasoning. “When you think from an actual accuracy, processing, fundamental, from the pocket… nobody better,” he said. Wingo acknowledged his point and said, “Totally fair.”
