Scottie Scheffler spent the build-up to the Scottish Open and The Open Championship declaring his love for UK golf.
He said how much he’s looking forward to playing links golf over the next two weeks, and wishes the PGA Tour would come to these types of venues more often.

The world number one even spent some time playing at North Berwick while he was in Scotland, one of the most historic golf clubs on the planet. But what he did while he was there rubbed the golf world the wrong way.

Scottie Scheffler slammed by golf fans for how he dressed at North Berwick
A video of Scheffler playing at North Berwick circulated online, and golf fans were not happy with his attire. The American wore gym shorts and a T-shirt to one of the world’s most historic golf courses.
One fan posted to X: “Must admit, it’s not a good look. Call me old-fashioned, but you need to respect the traditions of the game when playing a course like North Berwick.”

That was the consensus among many fans. Another agreed: “It’s awful that he’d show up to play dressed like that. I don’t give a s–t what’s going on in the world, what’s going on in the game of golf, you’re a professional, you show up in a golf shirt. Shorts are fine, but show up dress like a proper golfer, not some public course golf bro.”
Another fan effectively said the game is gone in a hyperbolic outcry: “Scottie Scheffler visits one of the greatest and most sacred golf courses on earth… And wears a T-Shirt and gym shorts. What is happening to the very fabric of our society? Is this how civilized society ends? What about the children?”
But while many fans were upset to see Scheffler not meet their standard for how you should dress on a course like this, others rushed to his defense. Let athletes be athletes, one fan said: “When are they going to get rid of dress codes and let golfers wear what they want and be athletes?”
Another noted that Scheffler didn’t look like he turned up to play golf, and simply ended up with a club in his hands.

“Clearly, he wasn’t planning to play. I doubt very much those are his clubs. NB asked him would he hit a few on camera? Poor by NB when they are otherwise so strict with their rules.”
And regardless, one fan thinks that the rules that apply to the average golfer simply don’t to the best player alive: “Not a club pro on this earth is going to turn a world #1 away. He’s playing by a different set of rules from us bud.”
It is strange to see Scheffler not dress appropriately for such a historic venue when he insisted on wearing trousers in the heat of Texas because that’s what the pros wear.
Is it the most egregious crime ever committed? Of course not. However, it is disappointing to see Scheffler not pay the venue the respect it warrants.
