SOUTHAMPTON, New York — Jon Rahm became the first player to shoot a bogey-free round at a Shinnecock Hills-hosted U.S. Open in 22 years.

Rahm wrapped up his opening round on Friday with five consecutive pars to stay at 2 under, where he was when play was suspended Thursday due to darkness.

Rahm finished four shots behind leader Wyndham Clark, but the only player in the 156-man field to go bogey-free.

The previous six U.S. Open rounds at Shinnecock had zero bogey-free rounds: all four rounds in 2018, plus the last two rounds in 2004.

Phil Mickelson, Fred Funk and Daniel Chopra went bogey-free in the second round in 2004.

Since then, all 578 cards between 2004 and 2018 included at least one bogey or worse, according to Elias Sports Bureau.

This year, more than 130 players finished their first rounds before Rahm, pushing the total number over 700 dating to 2004 before the Spaniard snapped it.

Rahm won the U.S. Open in 2021 at Torrey Pines, plus the Masters in 2023 before joining LIV Golf starting with the 2024 season.

At the most recent major, he tied for second at the PGA Championship last month, three shots behind winner Aaron Rai.
