Liverpool star will be desperate for a bombshell €100m deal to get over the line. It’s exactly what he needs.

Florian Wirtz had a disappointing debut campaign for Liverpool after his mega-money move from Bayer Leverkusen. Now, it wasn’t a complete disaster and he did manage five Premier League goals and three assists but those numbers are way down on what was expected.

It seems the playmaker needs something to change. Thankfully, that’s already guaranteed as Arne Slot is out as head coach and Andoni Iraola is in.

But it’s also clear that the squad’s makeup just isn’t good for anyone. It’s notable that Wirtz was far from the only star to struggle in this group – they all did.

Part of that is because Liverpool lacked genuine production from out wide. Selling Luis Diaz was a disaster in hindsight as there wasn’t a replacement lined up. It left the squad without an elite one-v-one dribbler who could provide genuine width.

Such a player can open defences up on his own, collapsing marking systems. But they also simply stretch the player with their presence, allowing central players far more room to operate in.

That’s what Wirtz needs above all. It’s why he’ll be desperate for Liverpool to sign Yan Diomande from RB Leipzig this summer – a player they unquestionably want.

Diomande is exactly the kind of player Wirtz should have alongside him. Someone to create space for others and offer a real threat to create for. That’s what’s needed to bring the best out of the German.

At the end of the day, any genuine wide player would make a massive difference. Maybe even giving Rio Ngumoha more minutes is enough. But making that wide player a truly elite one is only going to help Wirtz further.

The best is yet to come.
