Pocono Raceway already presents one of the toughest challenges on the NASCAR Cup Series schedule.

Known as the “Tricky Triangle,” the 2.5-mile track features three distinctly different corners, forcing teams to make setup compromises unlike anywhere else in the sport. Drivers often spend an entire race balancing strengths in one turn against weaknesses in another.

This weekend, they’ll have another challenge to solve.

NASCAR confirmed Monday that Goodyear will bring a new tire setup for Sunday’s Great American Getaway 400, introducing an additional variable as teams prepare for one of the most unique races of the season.

Goodyear bringing a new tire combination to Pocono

According to NASCAR, Goodyear’s Pocono tire package will combine elements that have already been used at several tracks this season with components specifically tailored for the Pennsylvania oval.

The right-side tire setup is new for Pocono but has been used during the past three Cup Series race weekends at Charlotte Motor Speedway, Nashville Superspeedway, and Michigan International Speedway. The left-side tire setup, meanwhile, is making its Pocono debut.

Goodyear NASCAR product manager Rick Heinrich said the tire selection reflects the company’s approach to one of the sport’s most unusual venues.

“Pocono is perhaps the most unique oval track we visit,” Heinrich said. “At the same time, our tire philosophy here draws on our intermediate track package, which is reflected in the Goodyear Racing Eagle tires we have selected this weekend.”

NASCAR’s O’Reilly Auto Parts Series will use the same left-side tire setup most recently seen at Dover Motor Speedway, while retaining the right-side tire setup introduced at Iowa Speedway last season.

As is standard for tracks measuring one mile or longer, the 15-inch Goodyear tires will also feature inner liners.

Why the new tires could matter on race day

A tire change does not automatically guarantee more passing, increased tire wear, or additional cautions. However, it does create another unknown for teams trying to find speed during a race weekend.

That challenge becomes even more significant at Pocono, where teams are already forced to compromise because of the track’s unusual layout.

The frontstretch corner resembles Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Turn 2 takes inspiration from the old Trenton Speedway, while Turn 3 features a flatter design that creates an entirely different set of handling demands.

Finding the right balance has always been difficult. Adding a new tire combination gives crew chiefs and engineers another factor to evaluate as they prepare for Sunday’s race.

Organizations that adapt quickest during practice could gain an early advantage, especially if long-run performance becomes a deciding factor.

With the NASCAR Cup Series regular season winding down and every point carrying added significance, even a small change in tire behavior could become one of the most important storylines to watch this weekend at Pocono.
