Could the 49ers be one of the NFC’s Super Bowl contenders?

Despite going from Super Bowl runner-up in 2023 to finishing last in the NFC West in 2024, Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio believes San Francisco still is a top-five power in its conference.

“In the NFC, it’s the Eagles, Lions, Rams, 49ers, and Commanders. Maybe the Buccaneers. Maybe the Vikings,” Florio wrote.

“Again, things can and will change. That’s why they play the games, as someone once said. All the time.”

It’s been a busy offseason in Santa Clara, with plenty of core players signing extensions while others opting to move on.

The 49ers signed George Kittle, Brock Purdy and Fred Warner to long-term contracts but also let some familiar faces walk, like Talanoa Hufanga and Dre Greenlaw.

Another key departure was wide receiver Deebo Samuel, who was traded to the Washington Commanders in March after the 29-year-old requested a trade from the franchise.

In spite of Florio’s optimistic outlook for the 49ers for the 2025 NFL season, the analyst is in favor of a new face emerging out of the NFC.

“For those who like a little variety, it would be nice for someone other than the Chiefs to get a turn in the Super Bowl,” Florio wrote. “And for someone other than the Eagles, 49ers, or Rams to emerge from the NFC.

“Since 2017, it’s been the Eagles three times, the 49ers twice, the Rams twice, and the Bucs once.”

Yes, Florio is positive about the 49ers’ upcoming season, but it comes with a bit of a caveat.
