BRADENTON, Fla. — The LPGA’s inaugural season kicked off in 1950, with the great Babe Zaharias winning eight times that season. Her season-long earnings totaled $14,800.
At this week’s Founders Cup, which celebrates the 13 women who founded the tour, the field of 120 competed for a $2 million purse and a winner’s prize of $300,000 for first-time winner Yealimi Noh.
For five rookies in the field – Kate Smith-Stroh, Rio Takeda, Fiona Xu, Miyu Yamashita and Madison Young – this week marked their first paychecks as official members.
While it’s a week of celebration, it’s worth noting that the Founders Cup lost its title sponsor in Cognizant. Last year’s Founders event featured a $3 million purse and winner Rose Zhang collected $450,000.
