Gareth Bale is one of the greatest players in Spurs’ recent history, and it was his first stint at the club that sealed that status.

His final goal before departing for Real Madrid came on this day in 2013 and, unsurprisingly, was an absolute screamer.

The flying Welshman’s North London career had gotten off to a wretched start, with an unwanted Premier League winless run and limited game time in his first two-and-a-half seasons.

It was only when he moved from left back to left wing in 2010 that he exploded, quickly becoming one of the league’s best players.

His final season at White Hart Lane was his finest, as he hit 26 goals in all competition, and this winner against Sunderland was among the best.

Bale would then complete a world record move to the Spanish giants, where he was pivotal in four Champions League wins, and also make history with Wales, before returning to Spurs on loan in the 2020-21 season.

To many, though, his absolute best days came in those early 2010 days.
