Roger Maris arrived in New York on the cusp of his prime, with a few solid power seasons under his belt. He left as a legend who broke one of baseball’s most respected, yet controversial, records, and he definitely paid the price for it. Time has given him his due place in baseball history, but the largely unpopular, introverted slugger had to live in the shadow of friend and fellow star Mickey Mantle in the convoluted sixties.
