The 2024/25 campaign was a difficult one for Real Madrid, as they failed to retain their crown in both La Liga and UEFA Champions League.
But even in a dire season, Kylian Mbappe was one of their rare positives. The Frenchman’s debut season at Bernabeu saw him win the Pichichi as well as the Golden Ball trophy.
And while one would expect Mbappe to continue his goalscoring ways next season, Xabi Alonso sees this more of a negative for the club.
Alonso wants to diversify productivity
According to MARCA, Xabi Alonso has taken note of Real Madrid’s lack of productivity without Kylian Mbappe.
Numbers back up the facts as well, with the Frenchman scoring 43 goals in 56 matches, accounting for over 30% of the team’s total. In La Liga alone, nearly 40% of Real Madrid’s goals came from him.
He was the one opening the scoring in 15 of the 21 league matches where he found the net. Those goals were crucial in helping Carlo Ancelotti’s side break deadlocks and control matches.

Alonso has taken note of this dependency on Mbappe when it comes to finding the back of then net.
As such, the new Madrid boss aims to distribute the attacking responsibility more evenly across the squad.
Players like Vinicius, Rodrygo, and even Valverde, who stepped up with key goals in Mbappé’s absence, are expected to play bigger roles next season.
Alonso’s vision is to build a more balanced attack, where the team doesn’t falter when the Frenchman is unavailable.
It will be interesting to see whether new signings such as Franco Mastantuono can help him achieving this equity when it comes to productivity.
