Aoife O’Rourke will box for a gold medal at the World Boxing Championships in Liverpool on Sunday after overcoming China’s Chengyu Yang in the semi-finals.

The Roscommon middleweight defeated the 2023 World champion Yang by a 4-0 split decision with one judge scoring the fight a draw.

The 28-year-old, who is a former world silver medallist and four-time European champion, will face Busra Isildar of Turkey in Sunday’s 75kg division final.

Isildar came through against Emma Sue Greentree of Australia in the other semi-final.

Mullingar’s Patsy Joyce, meanwhile, will leave Liverpool with a bronze medal from his first world championships.

The 19-year-old lost out to Spain’s Rafael Lozano Serrano in his semi-final by way of a 3-2 split decision.
