This Friday marks the inauguration of the 2025 Women’s Copa América. The tenth edition of the tournament is once again being held in Ecuador (the host for the third time) and comes with some important new features.
Here are the 3️⃣ keys to the 2025 Women’s Copa América.
Originally scheduled for a different date, the competition was strategically rescheduled by CONMEBOL with the aim of giving it greater visibility and symbolic weight in the calendar. The current edition not only breaks with the initial schedule, but also with one of the main features that characterized the tournament: qualification for the World Cup.
In December 2024, CONMEBOL announced that the Women’s Copa América will no longer grant direct spots for the World Cup, instead creating an exclusive qualifier for that purpose. This decision is part of a deep restructuring of the regional competition system, focused on boosting the development of women’s football through more specialized tournaments.
Instead, this 2025 Copa América will award spots for two major international events: the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games and the 2027 Lima Pan American Games.
Thus, out of the 10 teams participating in the Copa América, the two finalists will earn their place in the Olympic Games, while the other two semifinalists will qualify for the Pan American Games.
There will also be a match for fifth place to determine the third team to qualify for these games, in which Peru already has a guaranteed spot as the host country.
Out of the 10 editions of the Women’s Copa América, Brazil has won 9. The other was won by Argentina, in 2006, with Brazil finishing second.
The continental dominance of the verdeamarela is overwhelming, but as the Copa América editions have gone by, several teams have shown remarkable growth.
Argentina, which already has a title, yes, but also Colombia (a finalist in three of the last four editions), Chile, and Paraguay.
