Once considered a star in the making, DaRon Bland now finds himself in what could be a make-or-break season with the Dallas Cowboys heading into 2026. It seems a bit odd considering he was a First-Team All-Pro and Pro Bowl player in 2023, but in the NFL circumstances can change at the snap of a finger.

After signing a four-year, $90 million contract extension in August 2025 last year, the Cowboys were hopeful DaRon Bland was going to be a long-term fixture in their secondary. Now heading into the 2026 NFL season, there’s a real possibility this could be his last year in Dallas.

Unfortunately, No. 26 has looked like a shell of his former self the past few years after sustaining a foot injury that required surgery in back-to-back seasons. He also hasn’t come close to replicating the ball-hawking ability he showed in 2023 when he led the league in interceptions, five of which he returned for touchdowns.

There’s still hope Bland can return to his former glory and play like one of the best corners in the league like he did a few seasons ago. There’s also pretty significant concern his best days may be behind him, which would further expose Dallas’ biggest weakness, the CB position.

The Athletic’s Ted Nguyen discussed this in his article about the Cowboys massive defensive overhaul.

“The Cowboys’ biggest weakness is at corner. DaRon Bland’s trait is his ability to create turnovers, but on a down-to-down basis, he gets up too many explosive plays. He’ll now play in a defense that is predicated on stopping explosives. He going to have to make massive adjustments to fit into Parker’s scheme. Bland, in 12 games played, allowed the fifth-most yards in zone coverage among corners last season.”

With No. 26 currently working his way back from surgery on the same foot in back-to-back years, his inconsistency on a down-to-down basis, and the massive adjustments he’ll have to make to fit into Christian Parker’s defensive scheme definitely raises some red flags about his future with the Cowboys.

On top of that, the Cowboys can actually save $13 million against the salary-cap designating him as a post-June 1 cut/release in 2027 with only $4.3 million in dead money. This creates even more uncertainty about his future beyond the 2026 season with the Cowboys.

Add it all up, it certainly seems as if Bland is entering a make-or-break season with the Cowboys in 2026. If he can return to his 2023 glory or anywhere close to it, he likely sticks around. Anything less than that though could have him suiting up for another team in 2027.

We all hope he’s capable of being a key fixture in the Cowboys secondary this year. At the same time though, we may also want to prepare ourselves that this could be as last season in Dallas. Only time will tell how all of this ends up playing out.
