So close, yet so far away. Will their status change between now and Thursday’s first round? No one really knows for sure but there’s a short list of hopefuls on standby.

We’re talking about the alternate list for the 2025 PGA Championship, May 15-18, at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina, host venue for the second men’s major of 2025.

When the field for 2025 was announced by the PGA of America on Tuesday, there were 154 names with two spots being reserved for the winners of the final two PGA Tour events concluded on the Sunday prior, the Truist Championship and the Oneflight Myrtle Beach Classic, if that winner wasn’t already in the field.

Sepp Straka, already in the PGA, won the Truist. Ryan Fox, not yet in the PGA, outlasted Mackenzie Hughes and Harry Higgs in a one-hole playoff to claim the Myrtle Beach win, and, the 155th spot in the PGA.

Michael Thorbjornsen, third on the alternate list, got in the PGA when Vijay Singh withdrew a few hours before the two Sunday PGA Tour events concluded.

That then left one spot for Victor Perez to get in. With Straka already in the field, the PGA of America could then go to the fourth name on the alternates list.

Going forward, should any of those 156 withdraw before the first round starts on Thursday, the PGA of America continue going down the alternates list to backfill.

These 10 names were on the original alternate list released last Tuesday, but first alternate Patrick Fishburn later received an official invite, while second alternate Rico Hoey got the call when Billy Horschel had to withdraw as he prepares for hip surgery.

Here’s who’s next in line:

Alex Smalley

Vince Whaley

Doug Ghim

Matt Kuchar
