Several golfers have shot historic rounds at Augusta National, but discover who carded the record-low score at the Masters.
Justin Rose shot the lowest round at the 2025 Masters on Thursday, carding a 65, and Rory McIlroy’s 66, the low round of the day on Friday, was matched by Zach Johnson on Saturday, but do you know who holds the record for the lowest rounds ever shot at Augusta National Golf Club during the Masters, and who holds the record for the lowest 72-hole score?
Three of the four men’s major championships have yielded at least one 62, with the first one being shot by South Africa’s Branden Grace in the third round of the 2017 British Open, which was played at Royal Birkdale. Six years later at the 2023 U.S. Open at the Los Angeles Golf Club, Rickie Fowler and Xander Schauffele each shot 62 in the opening round, and a year later at the PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky, Shane Lowry shot 62 in the third round. But no one has ever shot 62 at the Masters Tournament.
The 18-hole scoring record at the Masters is 63 and is shared by Nick Price, who did it in the third round in 1986, and Greg Norman, who did it in the first round in 1996.
This year, Justin Rose had the lead at the Masters after 36 holes at 8 under (136), but that’s not even close to the 36-hole scoring record set by Jordan Spieth in 2015. The Texan shot 64-66 (130) to reach 14 under after 36 holes and went on to win his first green jacket.
The lowest 72-hole score at the Masters was shot by Dustin Johnson in 2020 when the Masters was played in November after being postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. That week, Johnson shot 65-70-65-68 (268) to reach 20 under, two shots better than the previous record of 18 under held by Tiger Woods (1997) and Jordan Spieth (2015).
And, in case you’re wondering, the highest winning score at the Masters is 289 (1 over) and is shared by three players: Sam Snead (1954), Jack Burke Jr. (1956) and Zach Johnson (2007).
