Cruz (27-3-1) punished Rolando Romero in March 2024 to become the WBA super lightweight champion, but he lost the belt a few months later against Jose Valenzuela. Fierro (23-3-2) is 2-2 in his last four fights.
When they fought in February, Cruz landed 248 of 624 shots (30.7%), while Fierro landed 238 of 786 (30.3%). Cruz outlanded Fierro in the first half of the fight, but Fierro, known for his granite chin, surged ahead in the latter rounds.
The two embraced after. Now, on a card featuring a legend and another rematch, “Pitbull” and Fierro look to stand out and outdo their last slugfest.
“You’re going to see a different ‘Tashiro’ and it’s going to be an even better war than the first one,” said Fierro. “The fans will be on their feet from the very first round. I will beat ‘Pitbull’ – no matter what. He better prepare well, and I think he will, because deep down he knows what he’s up against.”
“My mentality is always to fight like I’m down on the cards, because that brings out the best of me,” Cruz said. “I was lacking consistency in my pressure in the first fight, and letting him think. We have a plan to fix that and implement a wider variety of punches to get the job done.”
