Rory McIlroy has earned some well-deserved rest.
The world No. 2 captured the biggest victory of his life Sunday, winning the 2025 Masters in a playoff over Justin Rose. It gave McIlroy his fifth major title and was his first green jacket, giving him the career grand slam, only the sixth player to accomplish the feat all-time.
McIlroy will be a heavy favorite at the next major, the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow Club, a golf course where he has won four times, including last year. Before then, he has a couple other starts to make, but he’s not in the field this week at the RBC Heritage.
During the green jacket presentation in Butler Cabin, McIlroy got emotional talking to Jim Nantz and Augusta National chairman Fred Ridley, and McIlroy shouted out his parents before starting to cry.
“I can’t wait to see them next week. I just can’t wait to celebrate this with them.”
When will Rory McIlroy play on PGA Tour next?
McIlroy said he plans to go home to Northern Ireland sometime this week, where he’ll have plenty to celebrate. There was a big one at his home golf club in the early hours Monday morning, but McIlroy wasn’t in the field at Harbour Town before his Masters win, and he’s taking the week off to rest and recover from an emotional week.
McIlroy will return to the U.S. by next week, however, as he and Shane Lowry are set to defend their title in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans at TPC Louisiana. Then, McIlroy is also the defending champion two weeks later at the Truist Championship, formerly the Wells Fargo Championship, which he captured at Quail Hollow Club last year.
This year, the Truist is at Philadelphia Cricket Club since the PGA Championship is taking over Quail Hollow Club. The tournament hasn’t announced whether McIlroy has entered yet, but as a defending champion, there’s a good chance he tried to keep his crown.
