The Laver Cup returns to London in 2026, with Team Europe and Team World set to meet at The O2 from Sept. 25-27 for the ninth edition of the competition.
First held in 2017, the Laver Cup has quickly become one of the highlights of the men’s tennis calendar, bringing rivals together as teammates for three days of singles and doubles competition. The event has also produced plenty of memorable moments, from dramatic deciding matches to appearances from some of the biggest names in the sport.
Team World enters the 2026 Laver Cup as defending champion after beating Team Europe 15-9 in San Francisco in 2025. That victory gave Team World its third title, although Europe still holds the overall advantage with five wins in the event’s first eight editions.
With another loaded group of players set to compete in London, The Sporting News looks back at the complete Laver Cup history, previous winners and the all-time head-to-head record between Team Europe and Team World.
What is the Laver Cup?
The Laver Cup is an annual men’s tennis team competition that pits six of the best players from Europe against six players representing the rest of the world. First held in 2017, the tournament has taken place every year except 2020, when it was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Often compared to golf’s Ryder Cup, the Laver Cup gives players who normally compete for individual titles the chance to represent Team Europe or Team World. The tournament is played over three days on an indoor hard court, with players competing in both singles and doubles matches.
Each team consists of six players and is led by a captain. The three highest-ranked players from Europe and the three highest-ranked players from outside Europe, based on the ATP singles rankings on the Monday following the French Open, receive automatic invitations. If one of those players declines, the invitation moves to another highly ranked player until three players are confirmed.
The remaining three roster spots on each team are Captain’s Picks, which can be announced at any point before the start of the US Open. Each team can also carry up to two alternates.
The Laver Cup is an ATP-certified event, with individual match results included in players’ official records. The first team to reach 13 points wins the competition.
Laver Cup format, scoring
The Laver Cup is played over three days and features a maximum of 12 matches — nine singles and three doubles. Each victory is worth one point on the first day, two points on the second and three points on the final day. With 24 points available in total, the first team to reach 13 points wins the Laver Cup.
Singles and doubles matches are played as best-of-three sets with ad scoring. If the players split the first two sets, the third is decided by a 10-point match tiebreak.
If Team Europe and Team World are tied at 12-12 after all 12 scheduled matches, an overtime doubles Decider determines the champion. Unlike the other matches, the Decider is played as one regular set with ad scoring and a tiebreak if required.
Players receive an appearance fee based on their ATP singles ranking following the French Open. Each of the six players on the winning team also receives $250,000 in prize money, while the losing team does not receive additional prize money.
The Laver Cup is a certified ATP Tour event, and individual match results count toward players’ official records. However, players do not earn ATP ranking points for competing in the tournament.
Laver Cup all-time results
Team Europe holds the edge in the all-time Laver Cup head-to-head, winning five of the first eight editions compared to three victories for Team World.
Europe won the first four Laver Cups before Team World claimed its first title with a 13-8 victory at London’s O2 Arena in 2022. That tournament was also memorable for Roger Federer’s final professional match, when he partnered longtime rival Rafael Nadal in doubles against Jack Sock and Frances Tiafoe.
Team World followed that breakthrough with another title in 2023 before Europe regained the trophy in 2024. Team World responded again in 2025, beating Europe 15-9 in San Francisco to earn its third Laver Cup championship.

Which player has won the most Laver Cups?
Alexander Zverev is the most successful player in Laver Cup history, having been part of five Team Europe championship teams. The German helped Europe win in 2017, 2018, 2019, 2021 and 2024.
Zverev has also made more Laver Cup appearances than any other player, competing in six editions through 2025. Frances Tiafoe, Casper Ruud and Taylor Fritz are among the players next on the list with five appearances each.
Zverev and American Jack Sock share the record for most Laver Cup matches played with 16. Sock holds the record for most match victories with a 10-6 record, including a dominant 9-3 mark in doubles. Zverev has a 9-7 overall record.
Zverev is also the Laver Cup’s all-time leading points scorer with 21 points, one ahead of Sock. Carlos Alcaraz holds the record for the most points contributed by one player at a single Laver Cup, earning eight for Team Europe during its 2024 title run in Berlin.
