Muirfield Village is one of the toughest golf courses on the PGA Tour schedule.

Sure, Scottie Scheffler and many of the game’s best players make it look easy at times, but all of them endure their struggles at Jack’s Place at some point.

Outside of the majors, Muirfield was ranked as the second most difficult golf course on the PGA Tour in 2025, with players averaging 73.381 during the Memorial Tournament.

Scottie Scheffler won the Memorial Tournament on 10-under par last year, and the world number one reigned supreme in 2024 as well, with a score of eight-under par.

In fact, the winning scores have been single-digit under par in four of the last six tournaments held at Jack Nicklaus‘ golf course.

Both Scheffler and Rory McIlroy are in the Memorial Tournament field this week, as well as the likes of Cam Young, Xander Schauffele and Jordan Spieth.

So we should be in for a real treat as golf fans, with some of the best golfers on the planet set for a really challenging week in Dublin, Ohio.

What an eight-handicap shot at Muirfield Village just before Scottie Scheffler won in 2025

If the world’s best players struggle at Muirfield Village, it goes without saying that the layout and conditions of the course are the stuff of nightmares for amateur golfers.

Last year, X user Ricks on Golf was given the chance to play Muirfield Village just weeks before the start of the memorial tournament.

With more than 70,000 followers on X, Ricks on Golf was on a mission at the time to play the best 100 golf courses in the world.

Playing off eight, he obviously knows how to get the ball into the hole.

However, he struggled around Muirfield Village and eventually posted a round of 20-over par 92.

While that seems like a bad score on paper for an eight-handicapper, it really was nothing to be ashamed of, especially with Muirfield Village’s brutal rough.

Worst scores in history at the Memorial Tournament

The worst score in the history of the Memorial Tournament from a PGA Tour player was posted by Roger Maltbie in 1979.

The former PGA Tour player turned announcer carded a round of 92 – the same as the score shot by Ricks on Golf last year!

Then there have been five 88s posted.

Bob Goalby posted an 88 in 1977 while Gary Hallberg matched him four years later with a round of 16-over par.

Mark Calcavecchia and Mark McCumber both carded rounds of 16-over par at Muirfield Village in 1990.

Then, in 2003, Alejandro Larrazabal suffered the same fate, shooting an 88 at Jack’s Place.

A round of 92 at Muirfield Village really wasn’t that bad for an eight-handicap golfer, all things considered.
