Wesley Bryan endured golfing heartbreak during Open Championship qualifying.

The YouTube golfer made it to the final round of qualifying, and was in the mix down the stretch at West Lancashire. But a bogey on the final hole saw him miss out on a place at Royal Birkdale by a single shot.

It would have been Bryan’s first major championship appearance since the 2018 Masters, and his first appearance at The Open Championship since 2017, the last time the event was hosted at Birkdale.

The YouTuber is famous for being suspended by the PGA Tour for playing in a LIV Golf YouTube event, so this would have been some welcome momentum for his plea to return to the tour.

He shared his reaction to failing to qualify for The Open on social media after the event.

Wesley Bryan’s reaction to heartbreaking Open Championship qualifying

Despite Bryan’s attempt at qualifying ending in one of the most gut wrenching ways imaginable, he appeared to take it well.

He posted to social media: “I have missed competing. Today was fun….until that last putt missed 🤦🏻‍♂️.”

Bryan hasn’t competed in a professional event since 2025. He placed T51 in the International Series Philippines. His last PGA Tour appearance was the 2025 Puerto Rico Open in March, and he played in the BMW International Open in July.

Given that massive gap in competitive experience, Bryan performed admirably, despite missing out on his goal of playing for the Claret Jug.

Peter Finch says Wesley Bryan deserved to qualify for The Open

Bryan had fellow YouTube golfer Peter Finch on the bag during his attempt to qualify for The Open Championship, and he gave a more detailed breakdown of the day’s events on his social media.

Finch posted to X: “Wow, I can’t believe what I’ve witnessed today 😳😳

“I had the chance to caddie for @wesleybryangolf in Final Open Qualifying, and it reminded me just how brutal and brilliant golf can be!

“The conditions threw absolutely everything at us. Sunshine, driving rain, wind… it felt like we experienced every season in a single round. Through it all, Wes played some phenomenal golf. His second round was something special, climbing to -8 overall and right on the number to qualify

“Standing on the last, we knew exactly what was at stake. Unfortunately, an agonising bogey meant we missed out on a playoff by the smallest of margins. One shot. That’s golf.

“It’s impossible not to feel gutted, because he deserved so much from the way he played today. But at the same time, it was an incredible experience to be a part of, and a reminder of just how fine the margins are at this level.

“A huge thank you to everyone who came out to support Wes. The crowds around West Lancs were absolutely unbelievable, and the atmosphere made the occasion even more special ❤️❤️”

These qualifying events can be absolutely brutal, and Bryan proved that at West Lancashire. Unfortunately 35 holes of excellent golf wasn’t enough.
