Eddie Howe says Newcastle United are in ‘a very good place’ despite ongoing questions over Alexander Isak’s future and his absence from their pre-season tour of Asia.
The Magpies face Arsenal in Singapore on Sunday, but Isak did not travel with the squad.
The official explanation cited a minor thigh injury, yet speculation continues to link the striker with a possible move away before the transfer window closes.
Howe confirmed the forward is still in England. “He felt something in his thigh before the Celtic game,” he said.
“We thought it was minor, but he left training early on Monday and is now being assessed. Hopefully, he will be back soon.”
Asked about reports that Isak wants to leave, Howe kept his response measured. “There are always things happening behind the scenes,” he added.
“Alex knows he’s in the news every day. We have a good relationship with him and want him to stay.”
Liverpool have been linked with the 25-year-old, who has scored 62 goals in 109 appearances since joining Newcastle in 2022.
The club maintain they have no intention of selling, though any change could depend on a substantial offer and the player’s stance.
Howe stressed that Newcastle’s ambitions remain clear regardless of individual situations. “Whatever happens must be right for the club,” he said.
“We’re financially strong and determined to push forward. Our aim is to add to the squad and keep improving.”
The manager also discussed preparations for Sunday’s friendly. “The heat and travel are challenges,” he admitted. “Arsenal have been here longer, so they’re better adjusted.
“For us, it’s about fitness, tactics and building towards our best levels for the season.”
New signing Anthony Elanga has already made a positive impression. “He’s shown great attitude,” Howe said.
“It’s a lot to take in for a new player, but he’s handled it well and I’m excited about what he can bring.”
Goalkeeper Martin Dubravka is expected to join the squad when they move to South Korea, while Lewis Hall has resumed partial training after injury.
Newcastle continue their Asia tour after facing Arsenal at the Singapore National Stadium.
