In a minor miracle, there was only one injury from a Detroit police chase in which a man with “a lengthy criminal record” drove the wrong way on I-94, sped through a golf course and broke into multiple homes. The vehicular and foot chase spanned central and southeast Macomb County, and it took three police agencies to take 52-year-old Edward Tackett down.

It all started with a Harrison Township resident noticing Tackett drinking from a water hose outside their home. Not long after police were called, Tackett allegedly broke into a nearby house and stole a handgun, eventually fleeing on foot and carjacking a black 2023 Ford Expedition, kicking off a high-speed chase.

After driving west in the eastbound lanes of the Metro Parkway, another attempted carjacking and another break-in in which a resident shot at the intruder, Tackett drove through the St. Clair Shores Golf Club course, where golfers were teeing off. Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham later said that the course estimates around $10,000 in damages.

“We just see this guy flying down the middle of the fairway,” a golfer told WXYZ Detroit. “It was a scary situation for sure.”

The Macomb County Sheriff’s Office later released video of the golf course chase and part of the on-foot hunt.

After exiting the course, Tackett drove down I-94 and “luckily” avoided the traffic by moving to the shoulder. It was at this point that the police “called off” the chase for the moment, to avoid further danger.

Tackett, far from done, allegedly broke into a home (after trying a few others) and threatened to stab the resident with a fork if they didn’t give up their keys. A skirmish ensued, with the resident injuring their hand.

“He was coming at me and I kind of got behind him and then just grabbed him from behind and pinned his arms against him and saw the utensils in his left hand,” Bruce Seguin said. “For a minute I thought, did I know this guy, did someone send this guy after me or something?”

After entering another home, Tackett was warded off by a resident who threatened to shoot him. And it was around this point that the “was tackled and taken into custody.” That’s quite the day.

Tackett faces life in prison for the carjacking, due to his fourth-habitual status, and according to officials, he’ll be behind bars for a minimum of 25 years for the carjacking, home invasions and malicious destruction charges, if convicted.

“Within 40-some minutes, this guy went through several communities, attempted to break into multiple homes; didn’t care about property, didn’t care about life,” Wickersham said. “Again, one dangerous individual that was taken off the street.”
