Some golfers first picked up a club before they could tie their own shoes. Others found the game later in life. But regardless of which category you fall under, just about every golfer knows one thing to be true: When you’re first starting out, everyone has advice.
“It’s all in the hips.” “Keep your head down.” “Swing nice and easy.” The list goes on and on. In a new commercial posted on social media Tuesday morning, Nike and Beats by Dre poke fun at the well-meaning but quite annoying barrage of swing tips that beginners often face — and it features perhaps the most famous beginner on planet Earth: LeBron James.
The two-minute video begins with LeBron arriving to the golf course, where he’s greeted by PGA Tour pro Tom Kim, who jokes about LeBron being bitten by the golf bug, which the LeBron admitted to in a podcast with Steve Nash last fall: “The bug is real,” he said. “I’ve heard about the bug for so many years and I was like, ‘Well, it’s not gonna get me. I don’t like golf at all. Who wants to be outside all day walking around?’ Nah, it’s real. I am into it. My algorithm on social media, every other post, every other video is some type of golf video now.”

The commercial continues with Kim shouting at LeBron as he walks to the first tee: “Everyone giving you advice on your game? That’s the worst,” Kim says. Then he hilariously contradicts himself. “Just remember, it’s all in the hips. Keep that grip loose.”
As he steps up to hit his first tee shot, LeBron is met with more swing advice before he puts in the new Nike Powerbeats Pro 2 earbuds (available March 20) to block out the noise as the 1977 hit song “Easy” by the Commodores begins to play. The video then follows the Lakers star as he hacks his way around the course while the tips keep coming from other golfers.

It’s no surprise that Nike is capitalizing on LeBron’s newfound love for the game. The four-time NBA champion is active on social media in regards to his affinity for YouTube golf, even interacting with personalities like Wesley Bryan, Grant Horvat, Peter Finch and the Good Good crew. He recently had a simulator installed in his house and has been seen practicing his swing on the Lakers sideline during timeouts.
It’s anyone’s guess how much longer LeBron will continue playing in the NBA now that he’s north of 40 years old, but one thing seems pretty clear: When the sun sets on his legendary career, you can find him out on the links.
