A warrant has been issued for the arrest of former UFC champion B.J. Penn, per Hawaii News Now, after he failed to show up to his scheduled court date, the latest twist in a series of tragic events involving the retired fighter.
Penn was initially arrested two times over Memorial Day weekend for abusing his family, namely his mother.
Although the abuse is tragic to begin with, the truly shocking detail is that the mixed martial arts legend is suffering from the delusion that his family are imposters, which is known as Capgras Delusional Syndrome.
A video was posted to Penn’s Instagram of him arguing with police while being arrested on Sunday.
Penn was then released on a $2,000 bond, only to be arrested and released again on Monday with a bond of $1,000.
Both charges are for “abuse of family or household member.”
The retired star then posted another video to Instagram of the situation which led to his arrest, with a caption which continues the trend of delusional and conspiracy-minded posts he has made on the account for a long time now.
The video shows Penn shining a bright flashlight into his mother’s eyes to stop her from dialing 911 as she grows increasingly upset with his behavior, which B.J. has latched onto as proof of her wrongdoing.
A mixture of ridicule and disbelief has largely met Penn’s wild allegations that the woman he abused, Lorraine Shin, is not actually his mother but is an imposter who killed his entire family and is trying to steal his money.
After all, Shin is a well-respected citizen and former state representative candidate in their community in Hilo, Hawaii; it seems likely that someone would have noticed if her and her entire family had been murdered and replaced with actors.
Since trying to deal with his behavior at home failed, she has now alleged in a recent request for a restraining order that her son has used ‘extreme psychological abuse’ on her for several months.
In the request, Lorraine details an increasingly erratic and delusional pattern of behavior from B.J., including stealing her things, putting glue on her bedroom door, and blinding her with a flashlight after being caught stealing mail.
The restraining order was granted and is temporary, lasting for six months with the hope that medical treatment can cure her son of this dangerous delusion.
B.J. Penn is an all-time great mixed martial artist, a BJJ prodigy and true pioneer who won UFC belts at lightweight and welterweight, the first fighter to win belts in multiple weight classes.

Penn retired in 2019 at age 40 after a brutal, seven-fight losing streak which potentially left him with Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) that could explain his behavior.
Here’s hoping that he can get real psychiatric care and the damage done to his family can eventually be repaired.
