Ames girls golfers on their 4A state team championship
The Ames girls golf team talks about winning the 2025 Class 4A girls state golf team championship at the Pleasant Valley course in Iowa City.
The week of May 25-May 31 saw the IGHSAU girls state golf and girls tennis state singles and doubles tournaments take place.
The girls golf meets took place for all four classes and the girls tennis state tournaments comprised of two classes.
Ames and Gilbert won state golf team championships in 4A and 3A, respectively, and Roland-Story placed fifth at the 2A meet.
The IGHSAU state soccer tournament field was set for all three classes during the week. Nevada was the one Ames-area team to advance after qualifying in 1A.
It was also the first week of high school softball in Iowa. There were some excellent individual performances from Ames-area players during the week.

Ava Lohrbach, Gilbert
Lohrbach claimed the individual title at the 3A state golf meet held at the Saddleback Ridge Golf Course in Solon on May 29-30.
She turned in the best score among state competitors in all four classes. She finished 8 under over 36 holes with an impressive 136.
Emersen Motl, Ames
Motl was an individual medalist in leading Ames to the 4A state golf team championship.
She shot an 8-over 152 over 36 holes at the Pleasant Valley Golf Course in Iowa City on May 29-30. She placed ninth overall and capped Day 2 with a dramatic putt that gave the Little Cyclones the 4A team title.
Brooke Thompson, Roland-Story
Thompson complemented top Roland-Story golfer Brinley Carlson during the 2A state golf meet at the Cedar Pointe Golf Course in Boone on May 29-30.
She placed seventh individually and Thompson came in 12th. Thompson shot a 166 over 36 holes to improve five strokes and move up four spots from her 2024 showing at state on the same course.
Lauren Schmidt, Nevada
Schmidt was the lone golfer competing at the 3A state meet for Nevada and she provided the Cubs with a top-20 performance at the Saddleback Ridge course in Solon on May 29-30.
She carded a 12-over score of 156 over the two days. She shot an 80 on Day 1 and then shaved strokes off that score on Day 2.
Cerra Muntz, Colo-NESCO
Muntz sparked the Colo-NESCO softball team during its first victory of the season when the Royals outlasted Boyer Valley, 14-13, on May 29.
She went 3-for-5 at the plate with a double. She also drove in three runs for the Royals.
