The UFC’s welterweight division is on fire right now. Former champion Kamaru Usman looks to join in on the fun when he faces the rising Joaquin Buckley on June 14 in Atlanta.

A three–time NCAA Division II All-American wrestler, Usman (20-4) won The Ultimate Fighter in 2015. He won the UFC welterweight title and successfully defended it five times.  Including a dramatic head-kick loss against Leon Edwards to lose the belt, the 38-year-old is on a three-fight losing streak.

Usman returns to the octagon for the first time since 2023. Following a long layoff, Usman is ready to prove he’s still an all-time great with a lot left to give.

“It’s a great fight,” Usman said of Buckley on the “Pound 4 Pound” podcast with Henry Cejudo via MMA Junkie. “He’s very aggressive, he’s strong, he’s athletic, and I like that. Every now and again, that warrior spirit, you need to exercise it. That’s where we come from, Henry. I’m one of those guys where I put in so much time and effort, that you’ve got to feel the fight a little bit.”

Ranked seventh in the rankings, Buckley (21-6) is on a six-fight win streak. He won four fights in 2024, beating Vicente Luque and former contenders Stephen Thompson and Colby Covington.

The 31-year-old called out Usman after a stoppage win against Covington. A win could propel him to a title shot. For now, he’s focusing on the biggest fight of this career.

“Right now, the big talk is that there are no stars in the UFC right now, and if there are, they either lost or fumbled the bag in some type of way,” Buckley said on Instagram via MMA Junkie. “So I really feel like this is my opportunity to really show up and show out.

“Yet again, I’ve got to go into that cage, get my hand raised – but not only get my hand raised, go out there and dominate this man and get the knockout that I know that I can get.”
