Golf’s longest day came and went on Monday, and Max Homa certainly gave it everything he could.
The six-time PGA Tour winner even carried his own bag throughout the course at Kinsale Golf and Fitness Club in Columbus, Ohio, after recently splitting with his caddie.
But in the end, Homa came up just short. He three-putted for par on the final hole to finish at 5-under for the day, which sent him into a massive five-for-one playoff for the last remaining spot. The putt was very doable, too.
Then on the first playoff hole, it was Cameron Young that flew ahead of the group. He sank a deep birdie putt to claim the final spot out of Columbus, which sent Homa, Rickie Fowler, Eric Cole and Chase Johnson home.
“It’s probably going to be heartbreaking, but it’s all right,” Homa said before the playoff, via The Associated Press. “I haven’t carried my bag 36 holes in a while, so I’m a little tired.”

The qualifier was one of 10 that took place throughout North America on Monday, with the final spots in this year’s U.S. Open up for grabs. There will be 47 total golfers who make it through out of the 744 that had signed up. Each event was different in field size and the number of qualifying spots available. Fowler and Homa, and others, could still earn a spot in the field when the USGA announces its special exemptions next week.
Homa and Fowler were among the biggest names vying for a spot. Homa has won six times on the PGA Tour in his career, though he hasn’t won since early 2023, and he’s struggled this year. He missed five straight cuts before his T12 finish at the Masters, which was his only top-20 finish so far this season. Fowler, also a six-time Tour winner, hasn’t won since 2023. He finished T7 at the Memorial Tournament on Sunday, which was his best outing of the year by far.
Perhaps the coolest story of the day came from Piedmont Driving Club in Georgia, where a teenager absolutely dominated the field in his qualifier. Mason Howell, a 17-year-old high school junior, went 18-under on the day to win his regional. At one point, Howell held a six-shot lead over the field. He beat out several notable names in that spot, too, including former Masters winner and Ryder Cup captain Zach Johnson, Greyson Sigg and K.J. Choi.
“It was a rollercoaster all day. I’d be lying if I didn’t say I was nervous,” Howell said on the Golf Channel. “Just hugging my mom and my dad walking off 18 green is just a feeling that I don’t know if I’ll feel again. That was one of the greatest moments of my life.”
A UPS driver was disqualified from his event in Maryland despite posting a bogey-free 68 in his first round. According to the Baltimore Sun’s Edward Lee, Nick Barrett failed to sign his scorecard in time. He said he just “got caught up in the moment.”

There were three qualifiers held last month, and Michael La Sasso earned a spot in the event for winning the men’s NCAA championship. Sergio Garcia narrowly missed out on qualifying at the Dallas event last month, too, which will cause him to miss his first U.S. Open since 1999.
The U.S. Open will start on June 12 from Oakmont Country Club outside of Pittsburgh.
Here’s a look at the notable results from Monday’s qualifiers.
