  • Mawhinney qualified by winning the 2024 Canadian Amateur.
  • Ten other First Coast residents will also be playing in the tournament.

Tyler Mawhinney of Orange Park has won an amateur national championship in two countries and an FHSAA state championship.

He’s now getting his chance at a PGA Tour event, at the age of 17.

Mawhinney is in the field for this week’s RBC Canadian Open, at the TPC Toronto Osprey Valley course in Caledon, Ontario. The rising Fleming Island High senior earned his spot in the field by winning the 2024 Canadian Amateur and joins Miles Russell of Jacksonville Beach in First Coast residents who have played in PGA Tour events as teenagers.

Russell played in last year’s Rocket Mortgage Classic and Butterfield Bermuda Championship, as well as two Korn Ferry Tour events.

Mawhinney will have some company in Canada. Ten other First Coast residents are in the field, including one other player who went to an area high school, Vince Covello (Nease).

The Canadian Open is also a prelude to the U.S. Open June 12-15 at Oakmont.
