  • Tommy Gainey, Rob Labritz, and Eric Axley earned spots in the tournament through an open qualifier.

The field for the PGA Tour Champions Constellation Furyk and Friends had a series of changes early in the week due to withdrawals.

It also added three players from an open qualifier at the TPC Sawgrass Dye’s Valley course, including two past PGA Tour winners.

Darren Clarke, the 2011 British Open champion, and multiple PGA Tour winners Tim Herron and Scott Verplank withdrew from the tournament. They were replaced by Mario Tiziani, Glen Day and Gene Sauers.

Clarke is just coming off a tie for third in the last PGA Tour Champions event, the Sanford International.

Tommy ‘Two Gloves’ goes bogey-free at Dye’s Valley

After a low-scoring shootout at Dye’s Valley on Sept. 29, Tommy “Two Gloves” Gainey (64), Rob Labritz (67) and Eric Axley (68) earned a spot in the main draw of the Furyk & Friends.

Gainey, who turned 50 years old on Aug. 13, is making his fifth Champions Tour start. His only PGA Tour title was at the 2012 RSM Classic when he shot 60 in the final round and missed a 20-foot birdie attempt at the last.

His nickname comes from the fact that he wears two golf gloves. Gainey had a bogey-free round at Dye’s Valley, with eagles at Nos. 8 and 17.

Axley won the 2006 Valero Texas Open with middle rounds of 63-63. He won by three shots over Justin Rose, Anthony Kim and Dean Wilson.

Four players shot 69 to miss a possible playoff for the third qualifying spot with Axley. Two, Brett Melton and Gord Burns, bogeyed the final hole.

Furyk & Friends field includes five Hall of Famers

The Furyk & Friends begins on Oct. 3. The field still includes Schwab Cup points leader Miguel Angel Jimenez of Spain, and World Golf hall of Fame members Vijay Singh of Ponte Vedra Beach, Davis Love III of St. Simons Island, Jose Maria Olazabal of Spain and Colin Montgomerie of Scotland.
