The Yankees lost a pair of annoying close games to the Blue Jays to begin last weekend in Toronto, so it was nice to see New York return the favor last night while also trimming the Rays’ AL East lead to three games. Cam Schlittler bent but did not break, a close call went the Yanks’ way on Spencer Jones’ decisive high, majestic homer down the right-field line, and they held on for a 3-1 win. Hell yeah. They lost Cam’s most recent start against the Jays and had to win a game started by his top AL Cy Young foe, Dylan Cease, to avoid a sweep a week ago. The Bombers still obviously want to win today no matter what, but the stakes are at least a little less high with Cease aiming for his own revenge. Don’t grant it!

Today on the site, John will discuss a forgotten figure from baseball history who has had a profound effect on the game: Abner Powell, innovator of the rain delay tarp and much more. Madison will run through the Rivalry Roundup, and Jeff will salute the 137th birthday of the Yankees’ first World Series-winning behind the plate, Wally Schang. Nick will also discuss former top Giants prospect Marco Luciano, who has found new life in the Yankees’ system.
