Thomas Detry hits out at 'outrageous comments' from fans, 'it's pretty strange'

LIV Golf is seriously under the spotlight right now.

Back in April, Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund released a statement confirming that they would be withdrawing their funding from the league at the end of the 2026 season.

However, Scott O’Neil announced on Wednesday that LIV had received new investment, although the identity of the investors has not been revealed.

Despite the apparent new investment, LIV Golf still faces an uncertain future.

Even if they are still functioning in 2027 and beyond, the way that they operate will clearly change significantly.

One player in particular has launched a staunch defence of LIV Golf, though.

Thomas Detry hits out at ‘outrageous comments’ from fans

Belgian golfer Thomas Detry joined LIV Golf ahead of the 2026 season

Detry has been accused of making the biggest mistake of all by joining LIV Golf, due to the timing of his move and the opportunities that he threw away.

He won the WM Phoenix Open in 2025 and was eligible to play in all of the Signature Events on the PGA Tour this year.

However, he will now have to start from the bottom if he wants to return to the PGA Tour.

That said, it doesn’t seem like he has the desire to move anywhere.

While speaking with Beyond The Clubhouse, Detry lamented those who spread negative rumors about LIV Golf online.

“The communication is what it is. I mean it all gets blown out so quickly on social media,“ Detry said.

“There was one little rumor being spread and every single media outlet just takes it out of context and promotes it, so as an outsider, it’s really tough for a neutral person that doesn’t really understand the ecosystem out here to really understand really what’s happening.

“We’re here every single week and we know how successful those tournaments are, and we see everything running, we see how much players are enjoying it.

“So that’s where I think it’s tough for someone like me at least. You experience something on a golf course and then the next day you just go home and then you read some outrageous comments on social media which is a bit weird really.

“I’ll give you an example, after South Africa, it was such a fantastic event, I don’t know how anybody could have said anything negative about the event and you still manage to read some negative quotes out of it. So it’s pretty strange.

“Everybody who has a negative opinion on it has never been to an event. I have not met one person yet who has been to a LIV event physically and come out of it disappointed. All the people who have been to LIV events have really enjoyed it and say it’s fantastic.

“It’s not always easy to make people change their minds but I would tell them to come and see for themselves and see if they enjoy it.“

Thomas Detry comments on his future

Detry told Beyond The Clubhouse just how much he loves the product that LIV Golf offers.

“To be really honest with you, I haven’t really thought about it too much,“ he admitted.

“Again I’ve got full trust in this process. The product is great. I love every single event. I’ve had so much fun.

“So I haven’t really thought about what’s for next year. I’m committed here for the foreseeable future, I love it. And I’ve got faith in everybody, I’ve got faith in the leadership as well. So I haven’t really thought too much about it.

“I just play day by day and I’m just committed to playing well this week, the next couple of weeks and then finish off the season on DP World Tour once the season is over here.“

It will be interesting to see how Thomas Detry feels about LIV Golf if the purses significantly decrease from the start of the 2027 season onwards, like they are expected to do.

Maybe then he will talk more openly about a potential move back to the PGA Tour.
