Khamzat Chimaev is the new ruler of the middleweight division, and one of his predecessor’s has already weighed in.

Former UFC champion Israel Adesanya praised Chimaev after his lopsided unanimous decision victory over Dricus du Plessis at UFC 319, a performance that saw the Chechen-born star claim the belt with scorecards of 50-44 across the board.

Adesanya admitted that Chimaev’s ability to maintain his relentless pace for five rounds was the most surprising element of the fight.

“Not what I expected, but I’m glad Khamzat fixed his cardio, or improved his cardio to the point where he can go five rounds and just ragdoll people,” said Adesanya on his YouTube channel.

“That’s a mess to deal with, because I thought Dricus, maybe round four, would be able to stuff the takedowns because Khamzat would get tired.”

Instead, Chimaev never slowed down, chaining takedowns together, suffocating du Plessis on the mat, and breaking his rhythm from the opening bell.

“He slowed down Dricus which was very impressive,” said Adesanya.

“He prepared very well. His gas tank held up.”

The result ended du Plessis’ eleven-fight win streak and cemented Chimaev as one of the most dominant new champions in recent history.

For Adesanya, who reigned over the division for nearly four years, the display was enough to reassure him that the belt is in safe hands.

“Khamzat, the new middleweight champion,” said Adesanya.

“The division is in good hands.”
