On Tuesday, the San Jose Sharks and the NHL announced a scheduling and broadcasting change.

On March 6, the Sharks will take on the Colorado Avalanche at 6:30 p.m. PT. That game was initially supposed to be scheduled locally on NBC Sports California, but it will now be broadcast nationally on ESPN.

In turn, the NHL has changed the March 11 game against the Nashville Predators from an ESPN+/Hulu to a local NBC Sports California broadcast at 7:30 p.m. PT.

While there isn’t a known reason for the switch, the immediate thought goes to the matchup between Macklin Celebrini and Nathan MacKinnon. MacKinnon is the reigning NHL MVP and leads the NHL in points with 87 (21 goals, 66 assists).

Celebrini leads the Sharks in points with 42 (18 goals, 24 assists) and is the NHL’s leading candidate for the Calder Trophy for Rookie of the Year.

The switch to ESPN is also significant as basic cable subscribers can access the game rather than needing a subscription to ESPN+ to watch the game via stream.

Although San Jose is last in the NHL, watching Celebrini’s rookie season has been nothing short of spectacular, and the national stage will be able to watch one of the best up-and-coming matchups in the NHL.
