Two-time Grand Slam winner Coco Gauff returns to Wimbledon looking to add to her growing list of achievements. The French Open winner first broke through in London as a 15-year-old, shocking Venus Williams and announcing herself as the next great American women’s player.

Gauff, still just 21, has established herself as the best American tennis player and a true cross-over star. She, along with LeBron James, carried the American flag during the Opening Ceremonies of the Paris Games last summer.

She enters Wimbledon ranked No. 2 in the world and has a 34-5 match record in her last seven majors, reaching at least the fourth round in all seven. She’s among the betting favorites to win her first Wimbledon championship and could join Serena Williams (2015, 2002), Martina Navratilova (1984), Chris Evert (1974) and Billie Jean King (1972) as American women to win the French Open and Wimbledon in the same summer.

Here are the six greatest wins of her young career.

1. US Open Final, 2023

Match stats:

  • Opponent: Aryna Sabalenka
  • Result: 2-6, 6-3, 6-2
  • Aces: 2
  • Double faults: 5
  • 1st serve percentage: 66%
  • Break points saved: 6/10
  • Break points converted: 5/9

What happened: Gauff rallied from a set down against No. 1 seed Aryna Sabalenka to capture her first grand slam title 2-6, 6-3, 6-2. She became the first American teen to emerge victorious since Serena Williams in 1999. Sabalenka dominated early with her superior power, but Gauff managed to steady things in the second set and then played almost error-free tennis in the third, closing out the game with a hold at love to clinch the championship.

Notable quote: “I want to say honestly thank you to the people who didn’t believe in me. A month ago, I won a 500 title and people said, I would stop at that. Two weeks ago, I won a 1000 title and people were saying that was the biggest it was going to get. So three weeks later, I’m here with this trophy right now. I’ve tried my best to carry this with grace and I’ve been doing my best. So honestly, to those who thought they were putting water on my fire, you were really adding gas to it. And now I’m really burning so bright right now.”

Match stats:

  • Opponent: Aryna Sabalenka
  • Result: 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 6-4
  • Aces: 2
  • Double faults: 6
  • 1st serve percentage: 59%
  • Break points saved: 12/21
  • Break points converted: 6/13

What happened: Gauff again had to rally against the top-seeded Sabalenka, this time in difficult, windy conditions on the Paris clay. The first set was a 76-minute marathon in which Gauff led 5-3 in a tiebreaker but fell 7-5. She rebounded quickly, taking the second set 6-2 and then won a dramatic finale 6-4. The win gave Gauff a 6-5 lead in the head-to-head matchups with the current World No. 1.

Notable quote: “It was super tough when I walked on the court and felt the wind because we warmed up with the roof closed. I was, like, ‘this is going to be a tough day’. I knew it was just going to be about willpower and mental. It really came down to the last few points, but overall I’m just really happy with the fight that I managed today. It wasn’t pretty, but it got the job done, and that’s all that matters.”

Her first-round match was on Centre Court against five-time Wimbledon champion Venus Williams. She dispatched her idol 6-4, 6-4, breaking into immediate tears when Williams ended the match with a backhand into the net. Gauff went on to win two more matches in her maiden Wimbledon voyage.

Notable quote: “You never know what happens. If I went into this match saying, ‘Let’s see how many games I can get against her,’ then I most definitely would not have won. My goal was to play my best. My dream was to win. That’s what happened.”

Gauff was 0-7 against Swiatek prior to the match and needed four match points to close it out. Gauff went on to beat Karolina Muchova in the final for her first 1000-level tournament victory.

Notable quote: “It shows that I can be at that level, or compete at that level at least. I’m sure I’m going to face her many more times. I still think that I’m not even to the peak of my game.”

It was just Gauff’s fifth tournament in a WTA main draw, and she beat top-seeded Kiki Bertans in the quarterfinals. She lost in qualifying, but entered the main draw as a ‘lucky loser’.

Notable quote: “My dad told me when I got in, before the first main-draw match, ‘You can’t lose twice in the same tournament!’ I’m sure he never thought it would come this far, to being the champion, but I guess he was right.”

6. French Open Doubles Final, 2024

Coco Gauff

Match stats:

  • Opponent: Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini
  • Result: 7-6 (7-5), 6-3

Notable quote: “I think it’s just one of those things that when you least expect it to happen, it happens. After I lost the first two (doubles) finals, I thought, well, okay, I reached that point, maybe I should focus on singles. Same thing, US Open. When I won it, I didn’t expect to win. I was having a really bad year. Then here, I didn’t even expect to play. I think it’s funny how life teaches you those lessons.”
