Greg Sands on Texas Tech golf selection to Illinois regional
Texas Tech men’s golf team is the No. 4 seed in a regional hosted by Illinois. Coach Greg Sands discusses NCAA postseason, Big 12 and Connor Graham
The Texas Tech men’s golf team, fueled by Calum Scott’s 3-under-par 68 and Ben Gregg’s 2-under 69, was in second place after the first round of the NCAA Urbana Regional on Monday, May 12, in Urbana, Illinois.
The other three members of the Red Raiders’ lineup — Charles DeLong, Connor Graham and Tim Wiedemeyer — all shot even-par 71.
Scott eagled the 575-yard hole No. 15 on his first nine and the 565-yard hole No. 1 on his second nine. The senior from Nairn, Scotland, also had three bogeys and two birdies.
Tech is 5-under as a team, two strokes behind Illinois, which is hosting the regional at Atkins Golf Club. Rounding out the top five are UNLV at 3-under, Troy at 1-under and Marquette and Long Beach State tied at 1-over.
No. 1 seed Oklahoma State is seventh at 2-over, and No. 2 seed North Carolina is 11th in the 13-team field at 8-over.
Illinois’ regional is one of six 54-hole tournaments scheduled May 12-14. Three of the regionals have 13 teams and 10 individuals not on those teams, and the other three have 14 teams and five individuals not part of those teams. The top five teams and the lowest-scoring individual not on those teams qualify for the NCAA championships final scheduled from May 23-28 at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, California.
Illinois’ Jackson Buchanan made five of his eight birdies on the back nine to shoot 8-under 63, giving him a four-shot lead on Troy’s Jake Springer, who bogeyed his next-to-last hole for 67. Scott is one of three players at 68, and Gregg is one of nine players at 69.
Texas Tech players will be grouped with those from Illinois and UNLV for the second round on Tuesday, May 13. The threesomes are scheduled to go off from 8 a.m. to 8:44 a.m.
Last year at the Baton Rouge Regional, Tech’s Baard Skogen finished first, Scott tied for second and the Red Raiders took third as a team.
Scott is the only player remaining from that lineup. Gregg is a sophomore from Richardson Pearce, DeLong a senior from DeWitt, Michigan, Graham a freshman from Blairgowrie, Scotland, and Wiedemeyer a sophomore from Olching, Germany.
