Team USA heads into the Ryder Cup as the butt of the joke thanks to official Ralph Lauren t-shirts that seem to resemble golfer Rory McIlroy.
The Team Europe golfer from Northern Ireland couldn’t help but laugh over the $65 piece of apparel.
“It looks a little more like Adam Scott to me than me, but yeah, it looks a little similar,” McIlroy told Sky Sports. “I don’t know.”
When asked how he feels about Team USA wearing a shirt with his silhouette on the front, he joked, “That’s OK, I won’t mind that.”
The silhouette shows off what appears to be McIlroy’s signature high-and-tight finish to his swing.
The Americans will see plenty of it in person when the biennial tournament begins on Sept. 26 at at Bethpage Black Course in Farmingdale, NY.
Team USA will consist of the world’s No. 1 player, Scottie Scheffler, with a supporting cast of Russell Henley, Bryson DeChambeau, Harris English, Justin Thomas, Ben Griffin, Patrick Cantlay and Sam Burns, among others.
Meanwhile, Team Europe, which won in 2023, will feature McIlroy, Justin Rose, Jon Rahm, and Viktor Hovland, among others.
McIlroy is already preparing for what he believes will be a crowd rooting hard for the Americans.
“I watched a little bit of Novak Djokovic last night [in the U.S. Open quarterfinals] playing in his match against [American] Taylor Fritz,” McIlroy told reporters last week. “It was a very pro-American crowd. He’s been the best at handling that sort of — he’s had to deal with it his whole life, whether it’s playing against an American in New York or playing against Roger [Federer] or Rafa [Nadal].
“He came and spoke to us a little bit about that stuff last time in Rome. So maybe taking a leaf out of his book and channeling that energy the right way, but again, all we can do is control our reaction and our emotions to it. I think the less we play into it, the better it is for us.”
USA has 27 wins to its credit against 15 wins for team Europe heading into the tournament’s 45th edition.
