The deep dive: Until now, if you wanted to get your hands on one of TaylorMade’s MG PROTO wedges, you needed to be on the company’s payroll or have PGA Tour status. The forged wedge has been in the hands of staff players like Collin Morikawa and Tommy Fleetwood in recent weeks, but TaylorMade is making a limited number available to the public — though only in 58- and 60-degree lofts.
Forged and finished by hand, each MG PROTO wedge comes raw and unplated. That raw steel will oxidize and rust over time, creating a look that many accomplished players like. While the look is undeniably Tour-inspired, the feel and versatility are what really make these wedges stand out.
Two grind options are being offered: SC and SX.
The SC grind features 9 degrees of bounce and is built for versatility — softened with heel and toe relief to let players open the face and play a wide range of shots from different lies. It’s the kind of grind that appeals to players who love to get creative around the greens.
The SX grind, with 11 degrees of bounce and a wider sole, is the more forgiving option. TaylorMade designed the SX with a rounded leading edge and offset that helps golfers feel square to the target even when they open the face. The “Reverse-C” grind on the trailing edge is designed to keep the bounce consistent and stable, especially in sand or softer turf.
