Bragging rights, family pride and a world title shot are all on the line when Sunny Edwards and Galal Yafai clash in a high-stakes flyweight showdown in Birmingham.
Edwards reigned as IBF champion after beating Moruti Mthalane in April 2021. He defended the belt four times before being stopped in a thrilling encounter with pound-for-pound superstar Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez last December.
A comeback win against Adrian Curiel paved the way for this meeting with a very familiar foe in Yafai.
After claiming a win over Yafai in the amateurs, Edwards and his rival were both added to the Team GB podium squad. However, it was Yafai who became the favourite of the coaching set-up. Edwards soon grew frustrated and turned pro, while Yafai rode the wave to two Olympic games, winning gold in Tokyo.
That shared history is amplified further by older brothers Charlie Edwards and Kal Yafai, each former champions who never met during their world-ruling prime. Whoever prevails in this attempt to settle a decade of simmering familial feuding will win the WBC interim title at 112 pounds and earn a shot at the full champion – hard-hitting Japanese star Kenshiro Teraji.
