L’Equipe reports that Stuttgart and Stade Rennes have reached an agreement in negotiations over right back Lorenz Assignon. The 24-year-old will reportedly move to the Bundesliga club for a €13m transfer fee. An additional €2m in performance-based bonuses are also built into the deal.
The future of Stuttgart right backs Pascal Stenzel and Josha Vagnoman remain uncertain as both players are sitting on contracts set to expire after next season. Rumors that the Swabians wish to cash in on both players continue to crop up.
Swiss international Leonidas Stergiou – whom head coach Sebastian Hoeneß may wish to move into central defense – remains sidelined with a foot injury and is unexpected to return to the pitch until next month.
Stuttgart have been known to be on the market for another right back and were, for a time, reportedly considering Schalke 04’s Taylan Bulut at one point. Assignon constitutes a much more experienced and versatile option.
Assignon accrued Premier League experience under current Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany whilst on loan at Burnley during the 2023/24 campaign. This year, Assignon occasionally played higher up the pitch as a right wingback/right midfielder.
Assignon scored three goals and registered four assists in 32 Ligue 1 appearances this year. He also netted a goal and contributed an assist in a fifth round Coupe de France tie against Girondins Bordeaux.
