Vincent Studer won the 13-14 division by 18 strokes, Katelyn Miley defends girls title

ONTARIO – One year removed from finishing in a four-way tie for third, Liam Stone was determined to improve on that mark in this year’s Richland County Junior Golf Championship.

That meant starting off the two-day tournament with a strong showing at Twin Lakes Golf Club on Monday carding a 75 to put him second overall in the 17-18 division behind Nicholas Maglott.

“I had a pretty nice first round to set myself up,” Stone said. “I didn’t play the best the second day, but I just kind of kept it close and tried to outscore them.”

Day two was hosted by Oaktree Golf Club which saw an increase in yardage by more than 500 yards and several tiered greens that punished golfers. But even in tougher conditions, Stone kept his cool with another 75.

“These greens were going way faster than they normally are and I just couldn’t get adjusted,” he said. “I had a lot of three putts, but other than that I hit the ball great.”

He won the 17-18 division by six strokes over Maglott, Griffin Hughes, and Bailey Carmichael — Hughes won the tiebreak by virtue of closest putt from distance on the 9th hole.

Stone’s 150 was matched by Jackson Durchik who won the 15-16 division by two strokes over Cole Bowman and Josh Maglott.

“There’s always good competition here, way better than I feel in other counties,” Stone said. “Josh played really well and had a chance to win it an the end.”

Also winning titles on Tuesday were Vincent Studer in the 13-14 division by a commanding 18 strokes and Katelyn Miley who defended her girls title holding off Madison Gray on the final day.

“It’s definitely a confidence booster going into the season,” Stone, a rising senior at Lexington, said. “I’ll have some confidence heading into the first couple tournaments and tryouts.”
