Stephen Curry believes LeBron James’ free agency this summer was good for the league — and yes, he called up and tried to recruit LeBron to the Warriors.
Curry also said that’s not his path, even as he could become a free agent next summer.

Curry appeared on CNBC this week to promote his new deal with Chinese sneaker manufacturer Li-Ning and his signature shoe coming out next year, but for hoop fans, that wasn’t the most interesting part of the conversation. Curry said that yes, he reached out to LeBron and recruited him.
“If anybody didn’t [try to recruit him], I think they’d be a fool. It was a good time for the NBA — obviously with a guy of his stature, his notoriety, to be in that position where he got to choose where he wanted to go.”
A Curry and LeBron nostalgia tour would have been fun for fans, but LeBron surprised the NBA and chose Philadelphia, his fifth stop in his NBA career. Curry may think that is good for the league, but also said it’s not his path, he wants to stay in Golden State. When asked if he wanted to test free agency as LeBron did, Curry said, “Not at all.”
“I’ve always stated that I wanna be a lifer with Golden State. What we’ve built there, the fact that I get to run it back this year with Draymond [Green] and coach [Steve] Kerr. All the contract stuff, this NBA thing from year to year, is so crazy, things change really fast. But I do know my interest and mission to stay in Golden State and be competitive is there, and the contract stuff will take care of itself.”

Curry is eligible to sign an extension worth up to two years and $136.7 million. The Warriors reportedly went to Curry and said they would sign him to whatever kind of deal he wanted — one year, two years, player option, whatever money he asks for — and Curry is deciding what it is he wants, but a deal is expected, possibly before the start of training camp. Curry is set to make $62.6 million this season in the final year of his current deal.
