Dr. Mark Tully pulled off a golf feat the likes of which a local course owner has never seen.

Tully, retired from a Belden Village psychology practice, scored a hole-in-one Thursday, May 1 at Lyons Den in Canal Fulton. It came on the same No. 6 hole, on which he made a hole-in-one in his most recent round at Lyons Den, eight days earlier.

Andy Lyons, 53, has seen a lot of golf, playing for Northwest High School and collegiately for iconic coach Ken Hyland at Malone while spending his life around the family’s course.

“I was stunned,” Lyons said. “I’ve read things like this, but there’s never been anything quite like it on this property. There are plenty of holes-in-one, but not like this.

“It was maybe 30 years ago when the pastor of our church used a 5-wood for a hole-in-one on No. 11 and then flew in a 5-wood for a deuce four holes later.”

The No. 6 hole plays to about 110 yards from where Tully’s group teed off.

“It’s a Thursday morning mostly senior league,” Lyons said. “There are 12 to 30 of them who play here mostly on Thursdays, travel on Tuesdays, and in the offseason chase the weather.

“They show up, throw in five bucks apiece, and scramble from the front tees. The winning team takes all.”

Tully took a 1 on No. 6 the previous time the scramble group played at Lyons Den. Then he did it again Thursday.

“During those few seconds I turned away to put my club back in the bag, and the ball dropped in,” he said. “In fact, in none of my four holes-in-one in my lifetime did I ever see the ball go in the hole.

“I must be one of the most unlucky, lucky golfers in the world.”
