Southern Miss is making the second head coaching change of this season — and of this day.
The Golden Eagles on Sunday fired Will Hall, sources tell 247Sports and CBS Sports. Earlier in the day, East Carolina fired coach Mike Houston.
Hall, who was in his fourth season as Southern Miss’ head coach, was just 4-15 the last two years after a 7-6 mark in 2022. That includes a 1-6 start to this season, including a 44-28 loss to Arkansas State.
Hall took over in 2020 after Scott Hopson stepped down after the opener; the Golden Eagles finished 3-7 that season.
Southern Miss added Florida State QB transfer Tate Rademaker in the offseason looking to boost their offense; in prior years, the Golden Eagles’ best offensive recipe was Frank Gore Jr. on repeat. Rodemaker was benched earlier in the season and the last two games had been started by Ethan Crawford.
The 44-year-old Hall was previously the head coach at West Alabama and West Georgia.
One of the best Group of Five programs at the turn of the century, Southern Miss made 10 consecutive bowls from 2002-2011 under coaches Jeff Bower and Larry Fedora. The 2011 season was a highlight; the Golden Eagles enjoyed a 12-2 breakout season under Fedora, who left after that for the North Carolina job. The Golden Eagles have not enjoyed much success since; Todd Monken went 9-5 in 2015, but then left to be offensive coordinator of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. There have been a number of dismal seasons sprinkled in: 0-12 in 2012, 1-11 in 2013, and multiple 3-9 seasons.
