Solheim Cup captains Stanford, Nordqvist underscore unity and growth during opening ceremony

The 20th edition of the Solheim Cup began Thursday at Bernardus Golf with the opening ceremony.

While the matches don’t begin in earnest until Friday, Thursday’s festivities were an opportunity to celebrate the biggest team event in women’s golf.

Team United States was dressed in red suits and Team Europe in contrasting navy blue suits as a burgeoning competitive atmosphere built, but for this occasion, the overarching theme was camaraderie and an appreciation for how far this event — and women’s golf — have come since 1990.
