The San Jose Sharks rallied from a 2-0 deficit to end the Toronto Maple Leafs five-game winning streak with a 3-2 win in a shootout on Monday.
Jack Thompson and Tyler Toffoli scored for the Sharks, who ended an eight-game losing streak with the victory. Alexander Wennberg had two assists, and Alexandar Georgiev made 25 saves.
John Tavares and Matthew Knies scored for the Maple Leafs, and Anthony Stolarz made 19 saves.
The Sharks skated well with the playoff-bound Maple Leafs. Both goals against were on penalty kill for San Jose, while both of the Sharks goals were even strength.
Thompson and Toffoli are both natives of southern Ontario, Canada. Thompson reportedly had more than 20 friends and family members in attendance. He rewarded them with his third career NHL goal.
With the shootout win, San Jose hands Toronto its first loss after having a lead entering the third period. Before tonight, the Maple Leafs were 27-0-0 when leading after two.
Fabian Zetterlund scored the shootout-winning goal with a snap shot over the glove of Stolarz.
Tavares deflected Mitch Marner’s point shot past Georgiev to give the Maple Leafs a 1-0 lead on the power play at 8:28 of the second period.
Knies forces the puck into the net for a 2-0 lead with another power-play goal for the Maple Leafs with four seconds left in the period.
Playing in his hometown of Toronto, Thompson scored at 2:23 of the third period to cut the lead to 2-1.
Toffoli ties the game up 2-2 after Wennberg pulled Stolarz out of the net with a wrap-around pass in front at 10:10.
