The pressure is on Shakur Stevenson to put in a statement performance when he defends his WBC lightweight title against Josh Padley.
Stevenson (22-0, 10 KOs) had been due to face fellow American Floyd Schofield before his compatriot pulled out during fight week due to illness. It means a huge opportunity for Briton Padley (15-0, 4 KOs), who upset Turki Alalshikh favourite Mark Chamberlain at Wembley last September.
As was the case against Schofield, Stevenson is the heavy favourite to complete a successful second defence of the belt he won in a bout against Edwin De Los Santos in November 2023.
That fight and Stevenson’s subsequent unanimous decision win over Artem Harutyunyan drew some criticism as the richly gifted 2016 Olympic silver medalist was perceived to have boxed in an unappealing, safety-first style.

However, any demands for a spectacular showing at Padley’s expense must be tempered against the fact this is Stevenson’s first outing since undergoing surgery on a hand injury that forced the cancellation of his proposed showdown with former super featherweight world champion Joe Cordina last year.
“I’ve got a guy in front of me who wants to take my spot, can’t let him do that,” Shakur told talkSPORT. “He wants it a lot more than anybody else, for him to take this opportunity on short notice means he’s focused. I respect him for what he’s doing, I’d do the same if I was in the gym working and close to fighting weight.
“I watched one round [of Padley], let’s just go. I’m gonna beat him up, let him know he’s getting in there with an elite-level fighter.”
