Texas Tech golf coach JoJo Robertson on Klara Hurtova, NCAA regional
The Rawls Course at Texas Tech is host of the NCAA Lubbock Regional. The Red Raiders didn’t qualify as a team, but had a player make it.
Texas Tech women’s golfer Klara Hurtova carded her second consecutive 83, leaving her 22 over par after Monday’s second day of the NCAA Lubbock Regional at the Rawls Course.
Playing the back nine first, Hurtova made double bogey on holes No. 10 and 18. Her only birdie of the round was on the par-5 17th, and she made seven pars. She was 9-over going to her last hole before making another double bogey at the par-5 9th.
Hurtova’s a sophomore from Czechia who led the team this season in stroke average (73.2), rounds in the 60s (four), top-20 finishes (six) and top-five finishes (three). She finished first and tied for first at two events in March and tied for 19th at the Big 12 championships.
Wake Forest is even par after 36 holes and leads the team competition by eight strokes over Texas. After Tuesday’s third round, the top five teams and the low-scoring individual not on those teams advance to the NCAA championships final site May 16-21 in Carlsbad, California.
The fight for the five spots could be fierce with the teams in third through eighth place separated by three strokes. Iowa State and Arizona are tied for third at 26-over, followed by UC Davis at 27-over, Purdue outside the cut line at 28-over and Texas A&M and Tennessee at 29-over.
Three Wake Forest players are among the top four on the leaderboard with Carolina Chacarra at 4-under and Macy Pate and Chloe Kovelesy at even par. Farah O’Keefe from Texas is second at 2-under.
Hurtova’s scheduled to go off at 11:50 a.m. from the No. 10 tee, along with Ryann Honea from Abilene Christian and Chantal El Chaib from Georgia.
Players from Wake Forest, Texas and Iowa State will be grouped together at 10 a.m. Tuesday for the final round, going off hole No. 1. Players from Arizona, UC Davis and Purdue will go off starting at 10 a.m. from hole No. 10.
Players from Tennessee, Texas A&M and Campbell have tee times beginning at 10:50 a.m. on hole No. 1. Players from Florida Gulf Coast, Tarleton State and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi go off beginning at 10:55 a.m. from No. 10.
The tournament started Sunday, a day earlier than originally scheduled, because of rain in the forecast at the beginning of the week. It is free and open to the public.
