PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. — Justin Rose took one look at the weather on Tuesday, dubbed it “a curious day,” and decided to walk some of the famed golf links along the Pacific Ocean, Carmel Bay and Stillwater Cove with a wedge and putter rather than brave the elements.

“It was actually a lovely morning and you’re sort of thinking to yourself, oh, they’ve got the weather forecast completely wrong, blue sky, it was calm. Then literally it was like a switch, like 30-mile an hour winds, the ocean started looking angry, the clouds start rolling in and it’s going to be a pretty rough afternoon I think,” Rose said. “Yeah, that’s coastal golf.”

Along the way on his walk, Rose bumped into Scottie Scheffler and Si Woo Kim playing the last few holes together and having fun in the wind. “They were hitting drivers into 17, kind of starting it left over the beach club, cutting it in. 18, kind of hitting the ball sideways off a tee pegged straight into the ocean and trying to get the ball to come back onto the fairway,” Rose observed.

They weren’t the only ones. Emiliano Grillo hit a flop shot towards the ocean at the seventh hole and the wind was blowing so hard that his ball flew backwards over his head.
